There is a lot of misinformation about physical activity during pregnancy. However, strong evidence supports that regular physical activity throughout pregnancy is beneficial for both the mother and the baby. Fill out the form below to download the physical activity guidelines for pregnancy.
Physical Activity Barriers
Even though physical activity is essential, there are certain barriers that women encounter during pregnancy that may restrict them from staying active.
Misinformation: There is often confusion or a lack of accurate information when it comes to exercise during pregnancy. Some women may not be aware of the importance and benefits of physical activity and may never have received recommendations from their doctor. Additionally, some people may fear that pregnancy requires rest and that physical activity should be avoided.
Physical Symptoms: Fatigue, nausea, and discomfort are common reasons why pregnant women may choose to be inactive. Overcoming tiredness and nausea to go for a walk or do a few exercises can be challenging. Pain can also be a physical limitation that discourages women from staying active.
Lack of Time: This is a common barrier not only among pregnant women but also among those who are not pregnant. Navigating childcare or work, combined with the increased need for sleep during pregnancy, may lead women to perceive their days as shorter.
Motivation: A lack of motivation is another barrier that often accompanies the ones mentioned earlier. Pregnant women may prefer to delay physical activity until after the baby is born.
Social Norms: Depending on the environment, physical activity may be viewed positively or negatively during pregnancy. Social pressure can influence whether a woman becomes more or less active.
Environment: Factors like extreme weather or limited access to facilities can also pose barriers to physical activity for some women.
